the VISION

Through it's engagement in the community of Point Saint Charles, Saint Columba House:

  • Works for personal and collective empowerment through education, creating opportunities for participation, group sharing and support

  • Engages in the work of social change to address social and economic injustice through actions, reflection and analysis, community organizing and advocacy

  • Builds community by providing a safe place, a spirit of hospitality, inclusion, acceptance, respect, and networks to meet urgent needs; and by working collegially in all programs and activities, as staff, board, and volunteers

  • Seeks hope, meaning in our lives, and the presence of God through sharing and engagement

  • Collaborates in partnerships with those who share our vision for justice - in the church, in our community, in other community organizations, and beyond, to share the work and be a collective voice

Established as a United Church outreach ministry in 1926, Saint Columba House supported people struggling through the Great Depression in the 1930s. It worked alongside local residents throughout a painful period of deindustrialization in the 1950s when the closing of the Lachine Canal caused widespread factory closures and great job losses to the community. Saint Columba House continued to work with and empower local residents through a period of great innovation in the sixties and seventies when better economic times led to inspiring developments in the field of health and social service delivery. The proliferation of community and women’s empowerment groups in Point St. Charles was frequently spearheaded by the active involvement of Saint Columba House.

Guided by a theology of liberation in the 1980s, Saint Columba House looked to its international partners in Guatemala, El Salvador, Bolivia and Mexico both for inspiration and to learn about new models of social and political action to promote human rights and support community economic development.

Over the years, Saint Columba House has frequently spoken out on issues of public policy, mobilized communities to defend their rights and has always taken a strong stand to defend and work alongside those who are excluded: the intellectually challenged, the unemployed, children from low-income families, the elderly, those whose lives are affected by physical or mental illness.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES BY PROGRAM

Hand-in-Hand Program

Hand-in-Hand has volunteer opportunities on Monday mornings for art and or Wednesday afternoons Music.

Youth Programs

The Saint Columba House Teen Programs focus on youth empowerment and education, with the goal of creating long term solutions to youth issues in the community. We have two distinct programs that are currently accepting volunteers:

Get To The Pointe! an alternative sexual health education program for youth in South-West high schools.

Volunteer Roles:

·         Animating sexual health workshops

·         Developing sexual health educational content

·         Helping GTTP's social media presence

·         Helping GTTP's fundraising activities

The Press Start Youth Co-op, a project aiming to create youth-led workers co-operative in the neighbourhood.

Volunteer Roles:

·         Helping Press Start's fundraising activities

·         Supporting youth leaders to develop the structure of the co-operative.

·         Offering workshops to youth leaders on subjects such as finances, business management, collective decision-making etc.

After-School programs:

Tutoring/Homework Help: We are looking for volunteers to support children and staff during our study period. This includes helping children complete their homework, doing one-on-one tutoring with children who need additional support, developing individual learning activities, as well as planning and/or animating group learning activities that build literacy, math or second language skills (or any other fun and creative learning activities/projects/games!).  Volunteers can take on one or more of these responsibilities. Study period runs from 2:30-4:15pm Mon-Thurs (grades 1-4) and 3:30-5:00pm Mon-Thurs (grades 5-6).  Volunteers should understand that our programs support youth experiencing certain learning, socio-emotional or behavioural difficulties. We ask that volunteers commit to at least one shift per week.

Activity Animation: We are also looking for volunteers to run specific activities (ex. cooking, sports, fitness, art, etc.) in line with their passion and skills!  We are open to offering a very wide variety of activities in our programs.  Volunteer animators would be fully supported by our staff and work with groups of 6-12 children (ages ranging from 6 to 12 years).  Activities typically take place between 4:15-5:15pm Mon-Thurs (ages 6-9) and 3:30-5:00pm Mon-Thurs (ages 10-12).  Volunteers should understand that our programs support youth experiencing certain learning, socio-emotional or behavioural difficulties. We ask that volunteers commit to at least one shift per week.

Cafe Pronto

Cafe Pronto is a socially responsible neighbourhood cafe featuring the freshest local products and many homemade specialties. As a social enterprise initiative of Saint Columba House, the Café provides training opportunities to support those who have faced barriers to successful inclusion in the community.

We take pleasure in serving our customers with excellence in an atmosphere that is friendly and welcoming. And we proudly use all of the profits from the Cafe to support programs at Saint Columba House. Volunteers are needed to animate different a thematic daily

Take-out program

Saint Columba House's Meals on Wheels program is a holistic approach to food security for people with mobility issues and the problem of social isolation. In collaboration with our community clinic, we deliver food from Monday through Friday between 10 am and 1 pm to a variety of people. However, we do more than just deliver, we also try and engage our participants in conversations and attempt to build relationships of trust with them.

We are currently looking for drivers with cars to help our volunteers during the winter months.
